Although more than 30 species have been reported, L. pneumophila serogroup 1 is responsible for most infections in humans. Atypical pneumonia is often associated with systemic manifestations. It is responsible for 10% cases of pneumonia acquired in both the community and hospitals. During the infection, an immune response is developed against the L. pneumophila group related antigen. Detection methods based on chemiluminescence have received much attention due to their low background, linearity and wide dynamic range. When coupled to enzyme immunoassays, the signal amplification effect provided by the enzyme enables the design of CLIA (ChemiLuminescent ImmunoAssay) tests with shorter incubation times while keeping or improving their sensitivity.
